PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Typography in its three-dimensional form is an area explored physically and digitally in abundance in both design and sculptural installation.

However, experimenting with mediums in which to create a piece of 3D typography is territory that is ever-expanding. Using unconventional materials to create typographical pieces outside of the 2D norm is a new territory for me as a graphic designer, and this project has allowed me to learn new ways to practice typography, and expand my field of vision to consider space and medium with a new lens.

The purpose of this project is to explore how letterforms and the space around them interact, and the narrative we can derive from them. The word and the medium used were selected with the intent for them to work in harmony, creating a narrative that recognizable upon first look. The accompanying booklet showcases the final product of the project, information about the letterforms, the typeface details, and a bit about the design process.

Each letterform was formed using steel wire and manipulated by hand and with nose pliers. The direction of the wire as it is wrapped around itself is undirected, and the letterforms are meant to embody the word "bedlam."
